It was during health education class in middle school. We were learning about nail anatomy (who knew it’d become useful?) and the teacher would name and explain a part of the nail, then ask us to identify it on our own nails.
Nail plate? Too easy. Lunula? Done! Cuticle? Pfft, of course…wait, what?! I scrutinized all 10 of my bare fingernails (this was years before I started painting them!) but couldn’t find an example.
The cuticle, often erroneously confused with live skin tissue eponychium, is dead skin that has “rolled out” onto the nail plate. After my friends sitting around me couldn’t help, the teacher took my hands and squinted at my nails.
His verdict: “You don’t have cuticles.”
Is that possible? I had felt like an alien, like my teacher had told me I don’t have ears. (Teenagers can be so dramatic…)
Now, I know he was incorrect and I do indeed have cuticles that just like to hide! In a previous post,?I admitted to never having exfoliated my hands. Using invisible cuticles as an excuse, I have yet another beauty crime to divulge: I’ve never used cuticle oil.
With many cuticle oil devotees, I’m sure that’s like saying I’ve never used a top coat for my manicures. While I can’t compare the?Julep Essential Cuticle Oil?($18) to other brands, I had positive experience with my first cuticle oil and my fears for them were demolished.
Myth #1: cuticle oil is…oily!
Julep Essential Cuticle Oil?is an all-natural blend of vitamin E and essential oils. Oils = oily, right? Wrong. This cuticle oil is thin and non-sticky. For how lightweight it feels on the skin, it’s quickly absorbed and ultra-hydrating. On my toes that do accumulate cuticles, dry skin that looks opaque and white were quickly softened with all the dryness gone.
Myth #2: cuticle oil is messy!
I’ve seen cuticle oils that merely come in bottles with a round opening, or those that look come with a brush, just like nail polish. I can definitely see disaster waiting to happen, with bottles getting knocked over during application or applying too much product. Julep Cuticle Oil?is bottled with a rollerball head, dispensing only the tiny amount you need to moisturize the skin.
Let’s just say I’m now addicted to applying cuticle oil. Like applying lip balm/gloss/stick, the habit is FUN! Unlike hand cream, which requires a lot of massaging to sufficiently relieve dry cuticles, Julep Cuticle Oil?takes very little effort to hydrate the skin. It also doesn’t hurt that it has a wonderful natural, slightly floral scent. No wonder it’s been featured in Allure, Harpers Bazaar, and O Magazine, to name a few.
