With each serum comes its own set of promises. Many claim to reduce wrinkles, eliminate pores, brighten skin tone, renew cells, and turn back time to when you were a decade younger. (That would make me…oh, 6 years old since I unfortunately get mistaken for a teenager.)
Well, not so with the Dior Hydra Life Skin Energizer Pro-Youth Hydrating Serum. Despite its extra long name, it has a very short list of ?assertions; and by short, I mean just one:
Leaves skin hydrated.
Yup, that’s it. It has a fancy way of explaining how it achieves this, but other than hydrating the skin, it doesn’t ever claim to do anything else.
So why bother?
It’s a booster serum that “boosts” other products you use on top to penetrate better, and theoretically, work better. I don’t use it daily, but only when I feel my skin needs that extra drink, especially when I exfoliate my skin.
You may be wondering why I don’t just use extra or heavier cream/gel for more moisture. In my case, doing so on my sensitive skin causes break outs. Using just 2 pumps of this serum at night underneath my moisturizer provides just enough hydration without feeling heavy.
Its consistency is a fluid gel-serum. It’s quite orange in color and it even has a citrus-like scent that does linger for a while after application. I personally like it, but it may be off-putting to some.
I like that it absorbs very quickly without effort, but perhaps a little too quickly; you have to work fast to evenly spread it over the face. What I don’t like is that is remains sticky for a bit, so I usually wait a few minutes for it to fully sink in.
I’m sure I’m using it “incorrectly,” but I sometimes use it alone without moisturizer when the air is extremely humid. Even my gel moisturizers can feel too heavy at times when it feels like you’re drinking instead of breathing?air. I don’t want to go sans moisturizer, so I slather on this serum instead.
As you can see, it comes in a fairly large 50ml (1.7 fl oz) bottle and only available in this size. It’s considered large when most regular serum sizes are 30ml (1 fl oz). Priced at USD $73, it’s the least expensive serum from Dior, and considering it claims to boost hydration and nothing else, it’s only fair.
Overall, the serum does what it says and I can’t fault it for that. It provides just enough moisture for my sensitive, combination skin, but truly dry skin types won’t find this sufficient. Now that I’ve gone through an entire bottle, I’m ready to try something new — perhaps something that does more than just hydrate the skin. I’m curious to try a sample of Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate that Paris B from My Women Stuff?raves about!
Which serum have you been using? Do you have a favorite?
P.S. I’m wearing Dior Vernis in Apparat in the above photo. I don’t have swatches yet since it’s been rainy and cloudy here. I’m waiting for the sun to peek through so I can take photos in the sun for accurate color representation. Hoping for sunshine tomorrow!
