I reread this book last night.
The story is super predictable. The hero is incredibly childish, spoiled, and immature (he's already 24!). His raw emotions of jealousy and actions of revenge are awful enough to make one feel uncomfortable. The heroine is also beyond understanding. The author makes her look as if she was to make a great sacrifice for her lover. But wait a minute! It's her own debts for her overspending. She uses 100,000 francs a year and is 30,000 francs in debts. In contrast, the hero's annual income is 8,000 francs and he's rich enough to have his own house, hire a servant, AND NOT WORK. If she just sold luxury goods to get out of the debts, they could have saved most of the dramas. The passion is really well written, so are the excitements. The contrast between the beauty and the horrifying description at the grave leaves a strong impression, however.
