Why are wedding dresses so expensive?

From this week you can buy a wedding dress at Zeeman for a prize, but usually you've lost hundreds or thousands of euros soon. Why is a wedding dress so expensive?

It was a great stunt of Zeeman: 30 euros for a wedding dress (he's already sold out). It may not be the very best or most special copy, but still. It is in any case proof that it can all be much cheaper and that makes sense.

At the most famous bridal shop in The Netherlands, The Honeymoon Shop, prices are significantly higher. There you buy an entry fee of about 500 euros or a dream dress with all of it for 4500 euros. The cheapest alternative to a Zeeman dress is therefore soon 17 times more expensive.

Crafts can cost a little
How expensive a wedding dress is depends on several factors. Crafts in the Netherlands are of course a lot more expensive than a machine dress from China.

Victor van Westering, of Victors Wedding Design, knows no other why a dress is so expensive. He makes his dresses handy and does not make them in a cheap country in Asia.

Then a large part of the cost is involved in making the dress. He assumes that in an average dress about 20 hours work. Calculate 50 euros per hour and you already have 1000 euros. But that's not all of course. The fabric of a high-grade wedding dress is also far from free. For a 'normal' dress with a modest ride it costs about 400 euros. If you really make a fur and you want a 20-meter tow, then you pay for the dust only about 4000 euros.

Your mother in law drives the prize
But what about all those dresses made in China for example with the machine? That should be a lot cheaper? That's the way it is. The purchase price for such dresses is often around 100 to 200 euros. But you still pay 1500 to 1700 euros in the shop. A huge difference so.

Part of that price difference comes indirectly by your mother and your mother in law. The endless passages cost a relatively high amount of labor wages. Westering jokes: "I say once: When you leave your mother home, you get a discount. Her opinion often takes more time, haha!"

You pay for the name
Nevertheless, he must admit that marketing at the major brands plays a role in the price. "Women think: I want to look very beautiful on that one day." So there are certain brands that have a good reputation.

If you have that brand, you'll steal the show. Then you also pay for a name. "Pronovias, for example, is the Beehive under the wedding dresses. And you want a step higher than you go for Vera Wang."

30 euros? That will still be very cheap
Just back to the sailor dress. The gap with other dresses remains enormous. So much of the prize gain is booked in the store. For that dress, the chain does not lose any labor costs in the store, because it does not get fit. Also the materials are much cheaper and the garment is actually 'just' a dress.

Westering: "Zeeman has done it smartly. The top of the dress is stretchable, which makes it even more suitable. It is of course all beautifully filmed on that bike, but in the end it's just a dress that you also have at the Primark Looks a bit longer and white. A nice marketing trick. "

Zeeman does not want to lose much to RTL Z about how the dress is produced. He is made in India (where wages are very low compared to the Netherlands) but in which factory he is being made, the retail chain does not want to say. Zeeman emphasizes that there is no child labor.
